Emily would have liked to blame anti-social behavior for her decision to leave the reception before anyone else, but she knew very well that was not the case.

Emily couldn’t ever remember laughing so hard in her entire life.

Are you going to see him? Mia asked her.

Emily’s face couldn’t look more shocked if someone had used human blood to paint her skin red. See who? she asked incredulously.

Whoever is taking so much of your time lately.

Emily couldn’t be that surprised that Mia had noticed. Saturday morning phone conversations were a bit of a ritual for the best friends, and suddenly, Friday evening tended to be Brendan-time more often than not. If he was in her bed the next morning, the phone wasn’t getting answered.

Something like that, Emily said.
